2011 was a tough year for the island of Japan. Earthquakes really battered the area for that year. What really ravished the area though from one of the earthquakes was a massive tsunami that leveled some towns and areas completely. Many lives were lost, near 20,000. Businesses and homes forever gone to the incoming waves of water that swept through the area faster than folks could escape it.

The nuclear power plant there, something Japan really relies on for power, made the area off limits to everyone because of a meltdown. This meltdown may forever render some areas toxic for life. It will take billions of dollars and decades for this area to get back to the way it once was.

Most islands are barely above sea level, so they are very susceptible to damage from waves and tsunamis. Anytime you visit an island, know the potential dangers. Know what to do and what the warning sirens mean in that area. Most are equipped to try and warn their residents of incoming danger.
