2011 was a tough year for the island of Japan. Earthquakes really battered the area for that year. What really ravished the area though from one of the earthquakes was a massive tsunami that leveled some towns and areas completely. Many lives were lost, near 20,000. Businesses and homes forever gone to the incoming waves of water that swept through the area faster than folks could escape it.

The nuclear power plant there, something Japan really relies on for power, made the area off limits to everyone because of a meltdown. This meltdown may forever render some areas toxic for life. It will take billions of dollars and decades for this area to get back to the way it once was.

Most islands are barely above sea level, so they are very susceptible to damage from waves and tsunamis. Anytime you visit an island, know the potential dangers. Know what to do and what the warning sirens mean in that area. Most are equipped to try and warn their residents of incoming danger.

Islands have always been a popular getaway for tourists and people looking for an exotic new place to call home. But lately have these remote destinations been getting more or less popular?

Here are some reasons that people are staying away for now:

1) The economy has not just been bad in the US. The world’s economy has been in a slump just about everywhere. What happens is that people end up having less money to travel with or none at all. People also fear having large vacation budgets. Vacations closer to home usually cost much less.

2) Too costly. Travel prices have gone up, salaries and savings for many have decreased.

3) Natural disasters. There are some people that watch the news and see the devastating tsunamis and hurricanes and think to themselves that they do not want to put themselves in harms way.

Sure group number 3 may be small, however add it in with the other two and more factors that are not listed here and the problem just compounds.

I am sure if you have been around the beach long enough you have heard of the term undertow. So what is one? An undertow occurs once a wave stretches inland, underneath the surface of the water it returns to the ocean. Basically it can also be a described as a wave or current underwater that is going out to sea. Undertows can be extremely dangerous and in some areas occur quite often. Depending on the strength of one, a person can get pulled into the undertow and not be able to surface due to its strength and size. Many times islands know what conditions can increase the odds of these happening and send out warnings or post them in order to warn people that they can occur.

Undertows are usually very harmless but it is the rip current that can be dangerous enough to cause someone to drown. Rip currents are similar yet are typically much stronger and much more harmful. So if you hear of beaches having issues with either of these, know that their point is to protect you from strong under currents that can pull you out to sea and possibly keep you underwater for a long period of time.

Hurricanes can be very devastating to an island. If you live or are on an island when a hurricane is fast approaching the first thing you may want to consider is getting off and fast. Why? Islanders will be prepared, at least as prepared as possible, but you won’t be. Depending on the size of the hurricane it can literally wipe out part of that island.

If you do plan on waiting it out, make sure you try and find a solid shelter. Maybe the hotel you’re in will work, maybe not. You may want to consider something further inland than right on the beach. As tides and winds pick up, your hotel will be the first to get slammed. Further inland the wind can be hindered some by the structures in front of it or closer to the shore.

Also keep in mind that travel in the area could be at a stand still for days or even weeks. Power could be shut off for some time and food and water may become a little scarce. This article is not here to scare anyone, rather to help you to realize you need to stay informed of your options.

Oil rigs are essentially man made islands built in the middle of an ocean to pump oil from the depths of the sea to the surface.

Investors are now lining up to back an initiative to build their own island similar to what is done on an oil rig. Basically their thought process is to build a community that is free from the basic laws on most countries where they will come up with their own rules and moral codes, among other things. What could something like this cost? It would be billions of dollars, not to mention the cost for each individual to live there.

The team should have offices up next year in San Francisco and think they will be done building in 7 or so years. They will do this in international waters, free from governments and such. So would you move to such a place? Do you think it would be safe being out in the ocean like that? It sure does seem a little scary, that’s for sure.

Not all islands are always hot year round. The closer you get to the equator, the closer you will be to having something be more steady with it’s temperatures all year. Islands closer to this line will have very mild if any winters. That is why people in the winter closer to one of the poles find that they just need to head as far south as possible to escape the extreme cold weather.

Be careful, many times people fail to check temperatures before scheduling a vacation to one of these sandy resorts. Sometimes certain parts of the world and their islands will experience cooler weather, colder water temperatures and a big rainy season. So be careful when you do your research. Search the internet for the best place to vacation for the month that you will be traveling in. There will surely come up tons of results with tons of opinions as to why a certain place is better for that season more than another.

Islands are usually very rich in history. People are always looking for fun and exciting new ways to vacation rather than just lying on the beach. Many people have taken to treasure hunting on an amateur level to see if they can find sunken or buried artifacts on these islands. Many times these islands may have sunken ships in or near there shores that people can explore. Also, on their beaches there may be sunken or lost treasure. Or for the really amateurish seeker, you may be just looking for lost items from vacationers in the sands on the beach.

Good metal detectors, for example, can cost what a used or new car does. So understand what you are looking for and how you will find it. Failure to do so may hamper your efforts to recover anything on one of your trips.

And keep in mind that some of these islands may have rules as to what will have to happen to anything that you do find on their island. A good thing you may want to consider is to brush up on these laws and check online for other treasure hunters like yourself to see what they have to say.

Islands, believe it or not, can very easily be damaged. When I say damage, I am meaning that there can be lots of factors from natural weather events to man made issues that can cause problems with an island. For example, heavy waves caused by a hurricane can cause the island to lose precious soil and sand further inland. So if there are homes and structures near the beach areas, this can certainly be a problem for businesses and home owners.

Toxic chemicals can also be a problem. Oil spills, uses of heavy chemicals or various types of industry can pose problems for the surrounding natural habitats. Coral reefs are very susceptible to being damaged easily. These beautiful reefs are very sensitive to any types of change that can come their way. Even if the water temperature rises or falls too much for global changes, the reefs can be heavily damaged.

What can people do to help? Well, many local island officials limit chemical usage and industry on their islands as an example. By doing this they can help to keep the area they live and work as clean and natural as possible.

There are many types of islands. Sure they are all surrounded by water, but they do vary some. Continental islands for example are surrounded by water, yet they do rest on a huge continental shelf usually near a huge continent or land mass. Some examples of these would be Sumatra, Borneo, Sicily, Greenland and Barbados.

Another type is the oceanic island. Self explanatory really, this type is surrounded by water, but it is not sitting on a continental shelf. Most of these are volcanic in nature rising deep from the depths of the oceans. Some examples here are Tonga and Iceland.

Another category of an island is the tropical one. There are over 45,000 of these on the planet. A couple of examples here would be the Maldives and Polynesia. The last would be the desert island. These islands are typically inhabitable by nature. They typically have the climate of a dessert and can be quite small in nature.

So now you know the difference in the islands types of the world? Have you ever been to visit any of these islands yourself? If so, how many types have you experienced?

Retirement can be a very relaxing thing for many people to finally achieve. No more long work hours and tough work schedules. The stress of dealing with the constant changes of the work environment is finally over.

So now do you consider leaving the hustle and bustle of your current residence behind and move to a more secluded and peaceful location? Lots of retirees often look to islands as their retirement choice. First, that warm sun can always do wonders for your aching bones. It can also be nice to leave most of what you had before behind and start new. There are also lots of activities to do on islands that can be fun like dancing, fishing and hiking if you really have the energy. Be careful to make sure you fully understand all of the details of the move though. What is the ruling nation over the island? What are the real estate or nation’s taxes that can affect you? High taxes can really eat into your retirement money.

So please do your research and make sure that you look into every detail. Consider asking people like yourself that have already made the move and have lived there for at least a couple of years already. The more research you do the more peace of mind you will have.
