Island Vulnerabilities

Ever been on an island? Not many have been on one. They actually can be quite interesting to visit depending on which you decide to travel to. Smaller islands can be very vulnerable to many things. For example, a very large hurricane, if it were to head straight across a small island, it could literally wipe the entire thing out. There are usually very few places you can go on many islands.

The same is the case recently with the tsunami that hit the Samoa islands. The tsunami was quite large, yet because the island was barely above sea level- it ended up being more destructive to the inland areas.

Most of us remember the hurricane that wiped out New Orleans. Now, it’s not an island, yet it sits below sea level so to speak thanks to man made levies. The hurricane pushed in huge waves and tons of water, basically swamping the entire area.

Islands have that problem; they are low lying, and usually have more low lying areas than hill type areas. Here is a great article profiling the Samoa island chain. You will learn so much by reading this. It will help you to understand what islands are like and why they can be vulnerable to the changing world around them.
