Island Cultural Experiences

As time has gone on, you may have noticed that some island chains have become more and more Americanized. Largely in part due to them wanting to make tourists feel at home. You may find that the restaurants and some of the entertainment on these islands seems just like something that you would find right at home. On the other hand, many islands also try and preserve as much of their native cultures as possible. Take Hawaii for example, you will notice the grass skirts being worn during their dances as they entertain a party or a group of people. You will also notice that they have many restaurants that serve up island culture rich cuisine as well.

Travelers can be tricky. Some want the comforts of home where they travel and others want to experience something new. So more than likely no matter what type of island you visit, you are likely to experience a little of both. Islands are unique places to visit. Experiencing some of what the local cultures have to offer can be quite an exciting experience. Do some checking up on the destination you choose prior to visiting if you are curious about what you can expect.

Climate Changes Hurting Islands

Many people know that the climate is changing. Whether you believe this is just something that happens over time or it’s something that we are doing by polluting the planet, you cannot help but look around to see that there are changes occurring.

You hear stories of certain archipelagos or island chains that are literally sinking below the oceans. Other factors can be devastating to the natural eco systems of the ocean. For example certain fish type species live in waters for their mild temperatures. If those temperatures change too drastically, then the eco system can fail and quickly. For example, plankton need the waters they live in to be a certain temperature. If they are not they could die off. If they die off then the fish that live off them could die as well. Coral systems below the waters surface can be damaged by changing water temperatures as well.

So no matter what you believe, it is a fact that the waters of the planet are changing. Some changes may not seem so bad but others can be quite devastating. As time moves on, the effects of these changes could be felt by more and more people.

Floating Island Living

This may not be a post about your typical island or archipelago, but a cruise ship can come pretty close to being one. Cruise ships can sometimes be huge and house thousands of people at once. As long as the ship has power, you basically have everything you need to live and more. Better yet, you have the freedom to not only live well on the ship, but you also have the opportunity to visit other island destinations. At some point the ship will need to make port to refuel or take on supplies. Let’s face it they have not come up with a way for the ship to have a regenerated food supply. At some point they will run out and need to re-supply.

Cruises can have their own set of issues as well. First of all if you get motion sickness, you may not do that well on a huge ship. However, just taking in a regular island vacation should keep your motion sickness at bay while you are on the island. On cruises you also may not have the best accommodations and will lack the freedom to do what you like. Take any regular island vacation and you will have the chance to do just about anything the island has to offer, like fishing or scuba diving. So it seems although a cruise ship may float around the ocean freely, for some it just may not compare to having that island getaway vacation.

Indonesia: Disaster Island

Unfortunately for Indonesia, there seems to be no escaping disaster. The islands there are faced with many natural challenges. For starters, there is a huge volcano in the central Java area. This makes that entire region a very unstable place to setup shop.

Another challenge is the fact that they sit right on and next to some very unstable tectonic plates. These plates seem to be constantly moving and causing issues. A major problem is the earthquakes these plates cause. Some of these may be too small to notice, but it is the bigger ones that can really cause lots of damage. In addition, they can cause enormous damage by triggering a tsunami. These tsunamis can cause wide and mass destruction all along the coast lines of the island. Although the island is quite beautiful, travelers should be aware of what they are getting into prior to visiting.

To keep you and your family safe, you might want to understand the history of the area you are visiting. Some parts of the island may seem safer than others. You might also want to learn what to do in case there is an emergency. Knowing how to react to a natural disaster can really help keep everyone safe.

What to Do on an Island

Let’s say you are taking a trip to Japan, the 2nd largest archipelago in the world. What should you expect? Certainly they have some of the same tastes that we do here in the United States. But things will be quite different. For example, culturally you will find that the performing arts there such as dance, music and on stage performances will vary. They will be directed more to the Japanese culture than our own. You will find that these performances will be very rich in cultural history depending in the region you are visiting.

Sports are another example of something you will find some similarities in and some differences. For instance, the Japanese love baseball, just as we do in the United States. They are also beginning to really enjoy soccer, or if you’re English, football. A major difference is the intense popularity of sumo wrestling. It is still the national sport; however it has dropped quite a bit in popularity over the past decade or so.

No matter what you decide to do, try and experience things that you would not normally see where you are from. Try and experience new things and take in as much of the local culture as possible. In the end you will surely have a vacation worth remembering.

Islands Can Be Amazing

Have you ever been to an island paradise before? Have you ever been able to sit on amazing beaches, soaking up the sun and swimming in crystal clear waters? These beaches are most certainly out there.

Depending on where you want to travel and where you want to go, there are tons of different types of islands in the world. Some are very tiny no more than the size of a couple of football fields. Others can house millions of people like some of the islands of Japan do. So depending on your tastes and desires, there will surely be a beach out there to meet your vacation needs. All you have to do is look.

Tropical All The Way Around

When you think islands you usually associate the word tropical. Tropical places can be great places to visit or live. Many of them will tend to have a rainy season followed by more tropical type weather. Rain storms can some in and out of the area in minutes. There can also be beautiful sunny days for weeks at a time. There are also rarely, if ever, very many cold nights due to many of these islands being so close to the equator.

When you think tropical you think sun tan lotion, pineapples, bananas, mangoes and fish. These climates certainly have their own main food items just like Florida is popular for their oranges.
