The Samoa Archipelago Hit By A Tsunami
The island of Samoa was hit with a strong tsunami when an 8.0 earthquake hit very near to the island. Officials there fear that over hundreds may be dead because of the massive quake and waves that hit the beaches there.
Rescue efforts have begun but of course regions like this usually need international help. We can give food, money clothes, portable LED lights, toiletries and more to these people and families during their time of need.
With an island like this, and archipelago, they typically are not that much higher than the sea level. This makes them very susceptible to high waves caused by earthquakes. When one hits so close to an island like this, there is very little time to warn the people on the island of the incoming dangerous waves.
Also, typically with island chains such as this, the area is sitting on or near a fault line. These fault lines are constantly moving and causing frictions within the tectonic plates. Once the energy that has been built up has released, and earth quake occurs.
Anytime you visit an area like this, be careful and know the signs of something like this if it were to occur. It just could save your life.
