The Vulnerability of an Archipelago

Islands can be very vulnerable to the forces of nature. When you live in a country the size of the US you do not really think of us being that vulnerable to the oceans unless you of course live on the coast. Most of the people living here don’t live on the coast and really do not think twice about beach erosion, hurricanes and their after effects, and so on.

Even on the beaches of Hawaii right now, they are having issues with their beautiful beaches eroding away into the ocean. This is a huge problem for a place that relies on 1/3 of its economic income to come from tourism. People love to head to Hawaii for its exotic beaches and landscape. To lose their beaches in some areas could prove tough for their economy. They have already seen a huge decline in tourism due to the fact that the economy is struggling even globally.

Yes, islands can be beautiful places. If you ever consider visiting one however, or possibly even making a move to one, keep this in mind before you do that. It seems the ocean waters are mightier than the land that has sprung up from the depths of the waters some time ago.
