Waiting Out a Hurricane on an Island
Hurricanes can be very devastating to an island. If you live or are on an island when a hurricane is fast approaching the first thing you may want to consider is getting off and fast. Why? Islanders will be prepared, at least as prepared as possible, but you won’t be. Depending on the size of the hurricane it can literally wipe out part of that island.
If you do plan on waiting it out, make sure you try and find a solid shelter. Maybe the hotel you’re in will work, maybe not. You may want to consider something further inland than right on the beach. As tides and winds pick up, your hotel will be the first to get slammed. Further inland the wind can be hindered some by the structures in front of it or closer to the shore.
Also keep in mind that travel in the area could be at a stand still for days or even weeks. Power could be shut off for some time and food and water may become a little scarce. This article is not here to scare anyone, rather to help you to realize you need to stay informed of your options.
